October 15, 2021 - Cape May with Bruce B. |
||||||
Bruce B. was in town so we piled into the RV-7 and headed for a delicious breakfast/lunch at the Flight Light Cafe on Cape May Airport. A TBM Avenger - in firefighting livery -- took off right after we landed. After our meal, we checked out the ocean town of Wildwood, New Jersey, just east of Cape May Airport. Bruce had been there on the ground earlier in the week for the Race of Gentlemen Vintage Car & Motorcycle Beach Drag Races. Over 100 vintage auto (pre-1934) and motorcycles (pre-1947) including Indian, Harley Davidson, Excelcior, Ford, Dodge Brothers and more competed in an exhibition style beach race at the water’s edge on the Wildwood beach between Spencer and Wildwood Avenues. Then we headed for home via the swamps and marshes of south New Jersey along the Delaware Bay. |

One of my favorite places to fly!

Bruce enjoying the view.
No obstructions or man-made structures to worry about.
|
||||||
It's a different view every time I fly it.
Bruce had never seen Fort Delaware before so we checked that out. I only saw it for the first time a year ago myself.
Close-up. Construction on Fort Delaware began in 1848 on the current fort, with an irregular pentagon design about the size of the previous star fort. The fort was substantially complete by 1860. During the American Civil War, Fort Delaware was used by the Union as a camp for Confederate prisoners, in particular ones captured at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg.
After landing back at Essex Skypark, we decided to have some cold ones at the new Tiki Lee's Dock Bar on the other side of the Back River from the Skypark. It's one of those marina bars with sand and palm trees. A nice place to relax over a cold beverage. They had quite a little shindig here back on July 10: Link.
